Exploring California (San Diego, Los Angeles) by Sprinter Van. Part 2

All right ladies and gentlemen, we're going to give you guys a quick breakdown of what's on the plate for today. We have a pretty awesome section of California that we're going to be riding with our Sprinter Van today. Basically, we're starting off here in Santa Ynez Valley, and we're going to be driving through a couple of these little Central Californian oddities. There are some cool towns here - Solvang, Buellton, and then out to Jalama Beach, which is at the tip of Point Conception, and we're going to call it a day out by Pismo Beach/ Avila Beach area.

California Sprinter Van road trip

Let's hop in our Sprinter Van and get some breakfast. A fun little ride out of the Santa Ynez Valley. We're in the funky town of Solvang. It's literally like a little miniature Denmark here, the sister city Albergue in Denmark. It's definitely one of the quirkier spots in the Central California coast, and we're going to go start off the day right with some cinnamon buns and coffee, both of which are very Danish and very necessary right now. Let's go. Cinnamon. This is a bear claw with marzipan. And this is called a Spandle. It is custard and it means baker's eye. OMG. Decadent. A lot of people think that cinnamon buns are American. They actually come from Scandinavia, and the reason they use cinnamon, which is a spice that came from the Middle East and Asia because Vikings sailed down Black Sea and traded with Arab traders a thousand years ago. Isn't that crazy? This town is funky, certainly by no means a hidden gem. There are big tour busses dropping off people from Australia, Korea, China, but it's still really quirky. It's funny to see this little slice of Europe here in the middle of California.

Well, we made it here to the vintage motorcycle museum. Unfortunately it is closed, but you can peep in. There are some nice bikes back there, and you call them and they'll come open it for you. It's only open on the weekends. From Monday to Friday they will open it for you. However, we're going to continue because we're trying to cover some ground today, and we don't really have time to be wasting time, so we're going forward.

We're on the Santa Rosa Road, heading out to Point Conception and Jalama Beach. We've passed all sorts of vineyards and ranches. There are cattle; there's wine and there are these beautiful open roads. For me, personally, this is one of the coolest parts of California. There's an Air Force base down here, and back in the day when they were doing the space program, they thought they were going to land the Space Shuttle here. So the Air Force bought up all development rights for these ranches right here, but they ultimately ended up landing the space shuttles over in Cape Canaveral. These ranches are not able to be developed, and it's a beautiful untouched part of California.

All right you guys, we've just feasted on a Jalama burger, and now we're just chillin at Jalama Beach, which is absolutely gorgeous. It really reminds me of Blacks Beach in San Diego or Baja California, but a kind of a crazy history that we just encountered inside of the general store. The largest US Navy disaster in peacetime took place here in. It's called the Honda Point Disaster. It was September - seven ships were completely lost out of a fourteen ship armada, which ran aground right on the other side of this point. people were killed. It's just kind of crazy to think...it's such a beautiful calm day; you'd never really imagine that the weather can get pretty severe out here and difficult to navigate. I really do wish that we could hang out here all weekend. We're going to have to come back and definitely spend a couple of days here.

Sprinter Van California road adventures

We've got a long way to go to our next destination. We're going to have to hit the throttle of our Sprinter Van because we got a lot of mileage to cover. Luckily, we're taking one of the least known sections of the PCH: Highway between Lompoc, Santa Maria and Pismo Beach. Let's go. Let's do it. We have arrived to Avila Beach. Camp is made, kind of. Time to go to the hotsprings. We are bathed, showered, and starving. So where're we going to go eat? Well, I'll be honest. It takes a lot to get me out of that hot tub after such a relaxing soak, but we're going to go to a restaurant called Ember. It's a local or organic awesome restaurant, which is just down the road. It's supposed to be worth it for the whole trip, so should be good. We're going to hop into an uber. We're not going to ride our van so we can have a beverage or two, and yeah, enjoy a good meal. Beard in your beer. We just got our first two dishes, and they look delicious. The one that I'm most stoked about is this pork ragout over some pasta. It's got sauteed kale, and it looks incredible. I have to say great job, great find. Would never have known that this place existed. The Ember has sparked a flame, and I will return and feast here again.

Enjoy the ride. We're just riding our beast from feast to feast. Ok, fine, but I have the saying of rough camping and fine dining. There you go. Take it. We're saving money on accommodation. Rough camping, fine dining, and we're at our beasts from feast to feast. And then we're spending the money on nice restaurants. If you guys enjoyed this story, stay tuned for the next one because we're going to Big Sur, but the road is closed. We're taking a detour through Paso Robles. Going to be dope. You know what to do: stay curious, keep exploring, we'll see you on the road tomorrow. California Sprinter Van adventure continues.

How to have the perfect summer road trip - tips from famous Sprinter Van owners

Tips for a perfect summer road trip with a Sprinter Van

Summer is here, so it's time to plan your vacation. We asked some of the most famous Sprinter Camper Van owners on Instagram to share their tips for the perfect American summer road trip.

 @permanentroadtrip

1. Use iOverlander app to find free camping.
2. Load Gas Guru. It has saved us so much on fuel costs.
3. Watch the rpms and find where your van works best. If we drive 60mph we get 26mpg, if we go 75 mph we only get 18mpg.
4. Have some fun before starting a drive. We learned that if we get up and drive right away, we probably won't do anything fun that day.
5. If you find a killer campsite, stick around for a couple days. Same goes for when you meet awesome people.

The 170 Sprinter I find is the largest vehicle that you can relatively easily find parking for in most locations. Anything larger than this and I think in certain situations it would be a struggle. The 170 I find I can use most standard parkings lots and never feel as though I am out of place.

You've got flexibility when you're traveling in a Sprinter — take advantage!
We've found ourselves adapting our plans, like by driving further at the end of the day, or by staying an extra day somewhere. Basically, you don't have to be glued to your plans when you can pretty much camp anywhere you can park. When we make a decision to do something off our initial plan, we call it "pushing off the rocks." It always turns out to be a good idea, or an adventure at least. When you're willing to let go of your idea of what an experience is supposed to be, you can let it be whatever it really is.

My #1 road trip tip would be to realize that the destination isn't the whole trip. There is so much good stuff hidden along the way. We find great food and wonderfull people and bookmark future adventures by making sure to embrace the journey, not just make a B line to the destination.

Exploring California (San Diego, Los Angeles) by Sprinter Van. Part 1

Enjoy the story of two guys exploring California told in first person:

We are on the cusp of a very big adventure. We're going to ride our van up the coast to Big Sur. We're heading to Santa Barbara and the Santa Ynez Mountains.

Sprinter Van Roadtrip Los Angeles

Let us tell you about the route we're going to take. We're here in Venice Beach, and we're going to take the PCH, Highway 1 all the way up the coast past Malibu, Ventura, hop on the 101, get to Santa Barbara, have lunch there probably, and then make our way up to the Santa Ynez Mountains. We're going to be camping tonight, which should be a good adventure.... a little bit of rough camping, a little bit of fine dining, a nice balance right there, and we're going to have a good time.

We are driving a nice Mercedes-Benz Comfort Sprinter Van and we are ready for an adventure. Let's go. Whoahoo. And we're off. Up here on the left, we have the world famous Malibu, small and fun as usual. It feels like we're already on the Central Coast here, leaving LA at Zuma Beach. The PCH is one of my favorite roads. How about you?
I love this road, man. Road it on my bicycle when I finished college, and now it's kind of cool to go up it on a van. I like it.

Stop number 1: Ventura County.
We just crossed County Line from Los Angeles to Ventura County, and we're pulled over real quick at Neptune's Net, a famous biker bar.

We're on the road. Yeah, man. I think it's official. We're out of LA, and you can already feel the climate change... it's a bit more country up here. There's more of a ranch vibe in a lot of spots, uncrowded coastline, and the PCH is going to be our guide all the way up to Big Sur with a couple detours. This is the artery of California, and I'm stocked to go explore.

Coffee break is completed. I think this is the northern most limit I've gone on the PCH on our van. We've done it by car, but for me, at least, this is all fresh territory moving north.

Next stop is Santa Barbara. We have a bit of driving to do before we get there. How far is it? 50 or 60 miles from here, 70? An hour and a half? It's going to take a while, yeah.
We should hit the road. Let's do it. Ladies and gentlemen, we have arrived to beautiful Santa Barbara, California. I really like coming back here. I went to school here, back in the day. Honestly, this is one of the prettiest towns in California. We're in the heart of the old Spanish city. There's a presidio here. There's a mission nearby.

On the way up here, we passed all these arched bells along the road on the 101, which is because the 101 was originally known as El Camino Real, a royal road that linked together all the missions which the Spanish built, which are the backbone of California. Each mission was about a day's journey apart on horseback, a journey being from the Latin word "for a day." This thing called the Land Shark just went by, and I'm having a serious college flashback.
It's basically an aquatic bus. Somebody in college rented it out for a birthday party. We put a keg on it, and we drove down State Street drinking beers. And then from State Street went straight into the harbor and had a boat tour with a keg. It was the coolest birthday party ever. The great thing about this part of the coast is how the mountain range just comes right down to the coast, which creates a really cool ecosystem, and it means that we can just leave the city and in a couple of minutes be way up in the mountains. I love how California has so many different ecosystems, and you can really feel the shift here. The water current off the coast is colder here than it is down in Los Angeles. It's because of the ocean currents from the Channel Islands. The Channel Islands were right on the edge of two different ocean currents. The one from the north is way colder. It brings a lot of nutrients... but also causes a lot of fog. It does get foggy, but when it's sunny, it is unbeatable, honestly.

Sprinter Van road trip California

Ladies and gentlemen, we are on Gibraltar Road. We've left Santa Barbara behind. We are up in the Santa Ynez Mountains. This road is gorgeous. It's beyond gorgeous. We're surrounded by all these beautiful mountains. We've got probably another 25 miles. It's super twisty, so we're taking our time. Oh the views. The views are to ride for.

We have finally arrived at our camp site tonight in this beautiful little oak grove. It's the golden hour, and we're going to claim the campsite. There's a fire pit down there.
And then hop back on the Sprinter Van and head to Cold Springs Tavern to get dinner and a drink. One of the reasons that we're traveling so light is that we're using Bivy Sacs. It's like a condom for your sleeping bag. It's a water proof layer that you put outside your sleeping bag. We're going to be able to sleep under the stars without a tent. It's generally the best campsite we could have found.

We've arrived at the Cold Springs Tavern. This place is so cool. It's nestled in a little nook here. It's from the old stage coach route, from the 1860s forward when this was part of the mail route. This place is incredible. It's so homey and vintage and western. The food looks amazing. It smells really good in here. That was quite a well deserved meal after an epic first day on the road. Today was one of the most fun days I have had in a very long time. And to end it with a legit meal...at a place as awesome and authentic as Cold Springs Tavern...I don't think there's a better way to end it. Except the fact that we're going to sleep in a forest. We're going to go camp under the stars.

Stay curious, keep exploring, and we'll see you on the road. The road trip continues. Stay tuned for part 2.

Top 10 places to go with a Sprinter Van this Spring

Too many of us are growing up or growing older without seeing and experiencing the beauty so close to us. Spring is the perfect time to put down the phone (temporarily) and break the routine. Spring is also Sprinter Van time. America is really about sights, sounds, and adventures--not what’s on your screens, but what is out there. Here are just some of the most remarkable destinations, to get you started:

Pacific Coastal Drive. You won’t find something like the Pacific Coastal Drive anywhere else in the world--1650 miles of lush forests, seaside villages, incredible coastal views and even a bit of wine culture await your discovery. It’s all about the taste of the salt in the air, the sun on your skin, and the views with never-ending horizons.

Sprinter Van Rentals Spring Tours

Redwood National Park. If you’re on the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway), don’t miss out on this stop. Pull your Sprinter Van over for a view of the magnificent expanse of redwood trees that will make you and even your Sprinter Van feel small. Walk among the giants on the numerous, easily-accessible hiking trails that don’t demand any gear or experience. Pack some sandwiches and take it all in, one step at a time.

Glacier National Park. Featuring glacier-carved peaks, snow-topped mountains, valleys sliding towards the border and a magnificent drive on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, this is one place that compels you to slow down and take it all in.

The Grand Canyon. Overwhelming is one way to describe it—and that is the feeling you’ll tell all of your friends about once you step out of your Sprinter Van and admire one of the unmatched wonders of the world.  With over 270 miles of this geological formation, you will be surprised how well the multitude of colors along the rocky walls seamlessly blends into one another. Sunrise and sunset are also light shows of their own against the backdrop of the canyon.

Sprinter Van Rentals Spring Break Tours

Yellowstone Park. Geysers that gush higher than you would ever expect, colorful warm springs, mountains, lakes, forests, and endless wildlife make up the world’s first (and most visited) national park in the world! You can even experience some of it from the comfort of your Sprinter vehicle via the Grand Loop Road, which will also take you by all of the other unusual main attractions.

San Fran. For a unique urban experience, San Francisco harbors a bustling cultural life, an equally diversified food scene and an affinity for technology that is hard to match, to say the least. While nobody misses the Golden Gate Bridge, remember to visit the Palace of Fine Arts, Alcatraz, and the mission district.

National Parks Transportation Van Rentals

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Of course, you have the beach, but you can also spend an entire day in Broadway at the Beach. There’s so much to do and see here that many advise to just skip the boardwalk altogether. Still, you don’t want to miss out on the Hollywood Wax Museum, the Wonder Works or on one of the most praised American cuisine restaurants in the area, The Melting Pot.

Kansas City. Barbeque lovers go no further. Point the GPS of your Sprinter Van to Kansas City and don’t stop until you’ve reached Missouri’s border with Kansas. After you have had your fill, you can take in swing, bebop and the present-day music scene that still mesmerizes listeners. Don’t miss out on the fountains either!

Seattle. With a night-life like no other, Seattle offers tourists a myriad of reasons to visit, including an awe-inspiring variety of fresh foods and even an underground tour of the city’s ruins. If you’re here just for a little while, drop by the Chihuly Garden and Glass museum for a truly unforgettable experience.

Sprinter Van Rentals Spring Road Trips

Philly. Many come to Philadelphia for the history and while there’s plenty of that to go around, make sure you also pay your respects to the place where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed (the places where this great nation started). When you are done with the Art Museum, take your time to admire the Masonic Temple, a 19th century building reuniting no less than 7 distinct architectural styles.

Any and all of these places are excellent choices for Springtime - and Sprinter Rentals makes it easy! There are rental hubs near most airports, so you can fly to one destination and drive in style to the next. Or you can get nationwide delivery to the exact spot that you want, near or far. Let Sprinter rentals provide you with a Springtime trip you will never forget.

Sprinter Rentals Sponsors a Supercross Team

Motocross has been a lifelong passion for the founder of Sprinter Rentals. And after spending the last 20 years founding one successful business after another, this adventurous entrepreneur decided to make his own entry in beloved American sport of Supercross – not in the rider’s seat, but with a team of his own!

Sprinter Rentals Supercross Racevan

Sprinter Rentals partnered up with another gearhead and likeminded dirt-bike enthusiast, to sponsor a Supercross team. In the rider’s seat is Austin Politelli and behind the scenes, Sprinter Rentals teamed up with Betterways, TripTagger and Mercedes-Benz of Laguna Niguel to make sure the new Supercross team is up and running 100% of the time. Besides an appetite for dirt-bikes, the crew is also bound by strong ties of friendship, forged over 10 years of collaborations.

Sprinter Rentals Supercross team sponsorship

Initially, the plan was to send Austin and two other junior drivers to Anaheim 1. Unfortunately, the two junior drivers suffered injuries, so Austin had to ride alone for the team—and he came just short of the 450 SX class and couldn’t compete at the event. However, Politelli has shown that his will to succeed is stronger than any setback, managing a strong performance this February at the Arlington SX. When the dust settled, the team finished in 20th, showing that Austin can go head-to-head with reputed riders such as Tomac, Dungey, Webb or Musquin. With such a talented, focused rider, as well as a team of people that work together beautifully, everyone else needs to watch out for Sprinter Rentals TripTagger Racing.

Sprinter Rentals Race Van & TXS Army Girls

Of course getting this rider and team started was just like a Supercross course. From having to go cross-country to purchase the Yamahas, to scrambling for sponsors and funds, the guys were spared no tight corners or slippery slopes. Now, Politelli’s finish at Arlington shows how capable this team is and, of course, confirms that Austin is a rider who belongs in the top 20 U.S. Supercross scene. By the end of this season, Sprinter Rentals TripTagger and their resolute rider might be on everyone’s minds and lips!

2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van production has just begun!

The current generation of the Sprinter Van was launched in 2006. Now, Mercedes-Benz is looking at replacing it with an all-new model by the end of 2017 or early 2018.

2017 next generation Sprinter Van
Spy shot of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van

The home of the next-generation Sprinter will be Dusseldorf, but the company is also working on the construction of new production plants in South Carolina, since the old production facilities cannot meet the demand for these vans in the North American market.

2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van Engine and Specs

2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter will be offered with two types of chassis with codes 2500 and 3500, both with a powerful and economical drive BlueTec diesel engine and a total output of 161 BHP.

The German car manufacturer announced that the average fuel consumption in this model will be up to 23 mpg, thanks to a number of systems that save fuel, such as exhaust gas recirculation, catalytic reduction, double stage cooling system. The vehicle will be equipped with improved automatic transmission with seven gears.

The increased wheelbase of the new model will provide even larger cargo space compared to the previous model.
  • Crew vans will all have rear heat vent as standard equipment.
  • Passenger vans will now have the roof top rear air conditioning as standard equipment. They also will have the auxiliary fuel fired heater with rear heat vents as standard on all passenger models.
  • Some new options will be available like a leather covered steering wheel and body color painted front and rear bumpers.

2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Redesign

The design of the next generation Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is modern and the lines of the front end of the vehicle are very reminiscent of some American truck vehicles. The cabin is large and it has all the necessary systems for a safe and comfortable ride. These systems include air conditioning, adjustable steering wheel for height and reach, numerous compartments for storing things, holders for water and drinks, height-adjustable armrest for the driver.
The entertainment system consists of CD/DVD player and four speakers, wireless music streaming system, Bluetooth telephone interface. Cruise Handle, automatic lights, heated mirrors, multifunctional steering, blind spot help system, interior LED lighting, help kit, and more will be available for an extra charge.

The exact release date and price for the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van are yet to be announced.
