Mercedes re-calls sprinters in the U.S.
The German car maker has ordered 2589 of its Sprinter vans into repair shops because of a slow oil leak (no panic lease, it will keep running like a champ). Effected on monday by the U.S. Agency for Traffic Safety are recalls for vehicles that were produced between 2002 – 2004, Series 2500 TO 3500 (Passenger & cargo vans).
The 2003 models seem to have a dome lamp inside the vehicle that could get too hot and with dust on it could smolder (recall code G27). Also the EGR valve (a small $350.00 part responsible for air flow into the engine) on the older models has been having very slow oil leaks. We ourselves have had several vehicles with this issue and have had to replace some of them. We are only talking about a water bottle cap full of oil over 1000 miles driving. Nevertheless it is untidy and should not happen, so there is a recall of such older model sprinters from 2002 to 2004 which have the bigger older style manifold and EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve.
A vehicle recall is very common for any manufacturer, ad Mercedes Sprinter recalls have been very minimal. Many of the top van models have had recalls over the years. They are not necessarily unsafe, but they are bad for the image of any van manufacturer, passenger or cargo alike. What used to be only common in motor sports and competitive racing has now hit production lines. In today’s hugely competitive van market products need to be made at an improved cost with every model. Competition brings forth ever shorter developing and testing times, to an extent of where the products must hit the market within months of final development and days after final testing. If your EGR valve / manifold is leaking and you do not qualify for a free replacement from the recall then I suggest to purchase a low mileage used one from eBay and easily replace it in just minutes with very little mechanical knowledge and tools. All you will need is a torque socket set and 15 minutes. I have seen the
Sprinter Repair tool for that purpose also for sale on eBay.com, enjoy.
Keep in mind that Sprinters are now sold in the United States with the original Mercedes logo. But if you have a Dodge model you still need to see a Dodge dealer for a recall. We guess that this is also true for the Freightliner vans.
